Cox Pitched Reserved Ads Inside Bulldogs Games. Georgia's Rights Holder Says It Authorized No One.

By Pesach Lattin, based on ADOTAT reporting

Cox Media Group pitched an Atlanta advertiser reserved inventory inside live Georgia Bulldogs games, but Georgia's rights holder says it authorized no one, and the advertiser turned it down because she knew it could not be guaranteed. Asellus reporting reviewed for the story showed most impressions landing in the kickoff hour, rows where completed views exceed impressions, and no deal IDs, third-party tags or break data.

Why it matters

A promise that an ad will run inside a specific team's live game is a concrete statement a buyer can check, not general sales language, as one litigator quoted in the story put it. Buyers who pay a premium for in-game placement need proof that the seller has the rights and that the spot ran during the game. The story also notes Cox is under a 20-year FTC order covering how it describes its ad services. The useful protections are written placement guarantees, chain-of-rights documentation, as-run logs tied to break times and refund terms.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Who holds the in-game ad rights for this game, and can you show your authorization in writing?
  2. Will you provide as-run logs matched to the network's commercial break times?
  3. Do you accept deal IDs and third-party verification tags on this inventory?
  4. What share of impressions ran during the live game versus before or after it?
  5. What refund applies if a guaranteed in-game spot did not air inside the game?
